The garter is a timeless tradition for brides to incorporate into their wedding day. Aside from a tradition, the garter is also a modern fashion statement. What is a bridal garter and why would you choose one for your wedding day?
A garter is a form of lingerie, an elastic band used to hold up silk stockings. Decades ago, stockings didn't have elastic bands like today, so brides used to hold them in place with a garter around their leg.
Historically, the groomsman's job was to visit the groom's bedroom on the evening of the wedding 'to check' that the groom had consummated his new marriage. Bringing back a garter was a favorite item to act as 'proof.'
As years passed, this tradition tired and transformed into the groom tossing his bride's garter into the arms of the waiting single men at the wedding. It became considered as lucky to catch the garter and meant that you would be the next to marry!
Aside from the traditions and superstitions, the garter is also a fashion accessory for your wedding day. If you do select a garter though make sure that the color matches your wedding dress, just as you would with any wedding lingerie. For example, if your dress is ivory color and your bridesmaids are wearing lavender then perhaps you could choose a garter made of ivory and lavender lace.
Many brides select blue garters as the garter can be considered a "something blue" accessory which is traditional for brides.
Garters can also be incorporated into your wedding theme. These days, garters can be found with starfish and other symbols that are great wedding themes!
