Fleet GPS Tracking and Traffic Violations

It’s not uncommon to see “speed traps” along large and small roads, including the highway. If law enforcement is cracking down on speeding and traffic violations, then you need to begin a plan now, to prevent any vehicle in your fleet from being ticketed. Since 2005, fleet costs have risen a staggering 45% in just traffic violations alone. This is enough to close a company down! Fleet managers: it’s time to take action.

Studies show that toll violations accounted for nearly 56% of violations, while parking tickets consisted of 22%, and photo enforcement (the latest craze) were up to almost 20% of violations. It’s known that all cities and states benefit from these increased tickets, profiting from the funds. Fatal car accidents are also reduced when the reckless driving is eliminated. For example,  studies show that a 24% reduction in fatalities has occurred because of red-light cameras. This is a significant drop, showing that while these red light cameras may be “annoying”, they are also doing their job and protecting people on the road.

Now, how do these new laws affect you? It’s important to know that your drivers are safe drivers and following the laws. A fleet GPS tracking program is a great way to keep an eye on the drivers. Their speeding, behaviors and other data is collected and organized in order to see what kind of driver they are and how they act when on the job.

It’s also important to note: How does your organization manage the cost of violations by your fleet? Does the company cover these costs or is the fee passed down to the driver, who committed the crime. Are repeat offenders held accountable?

Many violations, toll violations, for example, can be avoided. Hold a fleet meeting that covers the changing traffic laws and how to avoid any violations. Ask your drivers to slow during toll plazas, as the average toll fine is $27. Be sure that each driver has the registration in the correct location should they be pulled over. By having an effective prevention program in place, organizations can expect an 80% reduction in toll violations, simply by having the vehicles enrolled and up-to-date.
