Guido Panerai's invention of a luminous new material was created by mixing zinc sulfide and radioactive bromide. This material soon became valuable to the Italian Navy helping them with their telescopic equipment and marine division requirements.
The Navy has been known to use this new luminous material to illuminate their night gun sights, their depth gauges and to guide their torpedo launches during WWII.
The navy required a special watch that could easily be read under water and in darkness which is how the Radiomir development came about. With its enlarged and easy to read face, the Navy was happy to accept this accessory. The crystal covering the watch was a 2mm thick Plexiglas that gave it exceptional transparency and resistance to underwater pressures.
