There is way more to being a fleet manager than keeping track of drivers and deliveries. You are also supposed to monitor your fleet (the actual
vehicles) and ensure that they are running properly and kept well maintained.
Here is a routine vehicle checklist that you should check frequently to ensure
that your fleet vehicles are running to the best of their ability. Here is a routine vehicle checklist that can help you keep track of each and every vehicle in your fleet:
- Brakes – This means both service and parking brakes.
- Lights – Check all lights on the vehicle including: headlights, high beams, blinkers, tail lights, brake lights, back-up lights, parking lights and side markers.
- Tires – When you check the tires you have to check the air pressure, the thread (it should be at least 1/8”), check for nails and bubbles as well.
- Belts – All belts should be well lubricated and quiet when the engine is running.
- Glass – Each window on the vehicle should be crack-free and clean to ensure proper vision when driving.
- Windshield Wipers – Windshield wipers should be clean and fully functioning when in use.
- Windshield Washer – Check the fluid to make sure that it’s full and clean.
- Engine Oil – Use a dipstick to check oil levels and ensure that there are no leaks.
- Coolant – Make sure that the coolant is filled to the correct level in each vehicle.
- Transmission – Check the transmission fluid and test drive the vehicle to make sure there is no difficulty in changing gears.
- State Inspection Decal – There should be a current state inspection sticker located in the lower driver’s side corner of the windshield.
- License Plate – The license plate should be current, visible and secure to the vehicle.
- Emergency Equipment – Most state enforcement agencies require that company vehicles be equipped with: A jack, lug wrench, tire gauge, highway warning triangles, fire extinguisher flashlight and first aid kit.
