Road Riders Auto Transport: Trailer Types

There are several variations of auto transport that Road Rider's Auto Transport offers. The type of transport method that you select will be factored on your budget, time line and safety concern to your vehicle. There are several various options available and it is important to ask your transport company on which option works best for you. Be sure to let your transport company know your expectations and concerns prior to booking your service.

There are two main types of trucks used for car transport service: tractor trailer trucks or a pick-up style truck, known as a hotshot.Tractor Trailers are usually more inexpensive as they can transport several vehicles at once, however they might take a bit longer than the pick-up style truck. Due to the size of the tractor trailer, it may be necessary for you to meet your driver in a terminal or open parking lot to load and unload your car from a tractor trailer.

Enclosed vs. Open Trailers

Enclosed trailers can cost up to twice as much as the open trailers but they offer complete protection from weather and road elements. These are usually used for high-end vehicles or for vintage cars that shouldn't be exposed to outdoor elements.

If you decide to ship your car on an open trailer, there are also several types to choose from. Remember, your car will be fully or partially exposed to the elements if you ship on an open trailer.

Multi-car transport trailers vs. Single car trailers: open and flatbed

Multi-car trailers are open trailers that can carry as few as three to as many as twelve vehicles at once. These trailers are the least expensive option, but your car will take longer to be delivered. Placement on the truck is usually dependant on your scheduled drop off in relation to the other cars. There are debates about whether your car is better off on the top or bottom rack. If your car is on the bottom, there is the possibility that oil from cars above will drip down. On the other hand, when trucks pull into areas with trees, it is possible a car stored on the top rack will be hit by branches.

A single car transport trailer is another type of open trailer and are typically used when a car needs to be delivered as quickly as possible. Single car trailers can be as expensive or even more than enclosed trailers.
