Loop the Lake for Literacy - Okeechobee

On April 2nd, 2011, the Loop the Lake for Literacy will take place around Lake Okeechobee! This event benefits the Palm Beach Literacy Coalition which ensures that all South Floridians receive the literacy skills that they need to succeed in life. This event features a 25, 50 and 120 bike ride around the famous Lake Okeechobee.

Whether you are a beginner or professional cyclist, it’s definitely beneficial to train before any ride, even if it’s a fun charity ride such as Loop the Lake.

All experienced cyclists will tell you that they have their own customized training routines for cycling which they abide by because without a plan, one is just training inefficiently. You can't just go out and ride around aimlessly on your bicycle until you reach your limit and think that you have actually done some solid training. It is no different from simply riding for fun. Here are the top 3 common mistakes people make when following a training plan.

One of the most important aspects of training for a cycling event is nutrition. Hydration and energy are the main ingredients for surviving long distance rides The body loses a lot of body fluid and salt during training which accounts for the majority of the weight loss. It is recommended to measure your weight before and after training and consume an equal amount of fluids while training. Having a proper diet is also essential as you need the energy to keep up with the demands of rigorous training. A good diet would be one that consists of a good combination of carbohydrates and protein.

If you’re training for a cycling event, be sure to listen to your body and give yourself rest if needed. When your body becomes fatigued, it needs rest and if it doesn’t receive the proper relaxation, it begins to fall apart and the aches and pains begin.
